Catching Yourself...

 

You're sitting around with a group of friends just hanging out and bullshitting with each other. Then someone says something, realizes what they have just said, and then they try to back track and catch themselves because they either feel bad about what they just said, or they're just trying to act like they didn't mean what was said. There's a high chance that everyone has done this before. 

Let's take last night for example. We're sitting there talking about how our friend always matches. Like literally, always a matching hat, shirt, pants and sneakers. Every article of clothing will always have the same three colors on it, he doesn't fuck around. And we were also joking about how he won't buy hats unless he knows it matches something that he has back at home. Whatever, that's not the point of the story. 

The point of the story is that one of the girls there said the words, "Anyone who takes time out of their day like that to match is a fucking loser." Clearly she had no idea we were talking about the kid sitting right next to her. She then turned to her right and said, "Well, I mean, not you, but you know what I mean." Really? You're gonna make a statement like that and then back track yourself? You already shot yourself in the foot, don't make it worse. 

I then said, "No, you meant him too," at which point she started laughing trying to play it off because she knew she had just fucked up. Like you don't want it to be awkward but the more you try to not make it awkward, the bigger the hole is that you dig yourself into. Sometimes there is just no catching yourself and back tracking after a statement. It's like shouting out a pedophile joke in church, there's no back tracking after that, you just have to live with the giant ASSHOLE sticker on your forehead for the time being. But hey, time heals all wounds. People will eventually forget.
