And This Lockout is the Exact Reason the NHL Will Never be a Top Sport in America

Do you see what's going on with the NHL lockout? The owners of the sport that makes the least amount of money in this country are complaining that the players are making too much is really what it comes down to. This whole lockout is the reason that hockey will never catch on with a majority of America.

Last year was a great year for hockey. People who don't normally watch began catching on because they couldn't watch the NBA for three months. What was on during the week with no baseball and no football? Hockey. It was a great time to catch the interest of people who normally wouldn't watch it. The season came and went, the playoffs came and went, and then the lockout began.

When people are just starting to gain interest, you can't have a lockout for the second time in eight years. Are you kidding me? How far apart are the owners and the players here. The owners want things like 5 year max contracts and the players want none of that. The owners are the ones who gave guys like Ilya Kovalchuk and Sidney Crosby long term deals, and now they want to take that away? It doesn't make sense.

This is exactly why America will always be run by the NFL, the NBA and even the MLB. Hockey can't catch on when full seasons are being canceled because the players and owners can't agree on dollars. In comparison to the other three major sports in America, hockey players don't really make that much money. They make way less than the other sports. Sure they live comfortably, but not like multi millionaires like Albert Pujols and Derek Jeter. If you want hockey to catch on you need to swing some sort of long term deal to keep the guys on the ice for more than five years at a time. If that doesn't happen we could see the end of hockey as a major American sport.
