The US, up 1-0 with twenty minutes left begins sitting on the ball in their own end. Where did the aggressiveness go? They turned it over, badly, while trying to sit on it, and they gave up a goal that tied the game late.
Then, the US goes up 2-1 in extra time on a header by Abby Wambach that looked as though it was an accident. She just stood there, no jumping, no nothing, just stood there, right place at the right time and it goes off her head and in.
Once again, the US sits on the ball with the lead in extra time. They turned it over in their own end, almost giving up a goal, and then they gave up a goal on the corner kick in like the 117th minute. Coincidence? But wait, there’s more.
We shank a penalty kick and Hope Solo who’s like the best goalie in the tournament and is “terrific” on penalty kicks has the save, but it somehow gets by her after she gets her hand on it. Weird?
Maybe it was all coincidence; maybe this was the way it was supposed to happen. But maybe, just maybe this game was fixed to lift the spirits of a country who needed it more than we did. We will never truly know the answer, but it does make you think.
I agree, the question is how much was the US compensated for tanking the game?
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question I wish I had that answer for you
