Tonight is the night that everyone looks forward to during All Star week. It's the equivalent to the Basketball and Hockey All Star Skills Competitions, it's the Home Rub Derby. Eight dudes battle it out to see who can hit the ball over the fence more times than everyone else. So here's a preview of this year's Derby, which will be taking place in Kansas City.
AL Participants: Jose Bautista, Mark Trumbo, Robinson Cano, Price Fielder
NL Participants: Carlos Beltran, Andrew McCutchen, Carlos Gonzalez, Matt Kemp
What you should know: Robinson Cano comes in as the defending champ and the favorite in my book to win it again. Prince Fielder is also expected to do well because of his experience in the competition as well as being a past winner. Since 2000 only three right handed hitters have won this competition and don't expect it to be any different this year. Kemp and Bautista were out in the first round of last year's derby and you shouldn't expect them to make much noise in this one. For some strange reason it's the lefties who dominate this event.
Sleeper: Carlos Gonzalez. No one is talking about him because everyone tries to attribute his numbers to the thin air in Colorado. But this guy can just flat out mash. He's a lefty with power and I'm saying he goes all the way to the finals.
Winner: I'm making the bold prediction and saying that for the first time since 1998-1999 we will have a repeat Home Run Derby champ. I'm saying Robinson Cano does it again. I just love his swing and I love how easy he makes it look. It'll be Cano vs Gonzalez in the final with Cano winning by 2. You heard it here first.
