I'm not totally sure if the Roto Experts are on to something here but let's just say they are. Could the Mets and Marlins actually be talking about a trade that would bring Giancarlo Stanton to New York? The proposed trade right now is the Marlins would send Juan Pierre and Stanton to the Mets in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Travis d'Arnaud.
I know exactly what every Mets fan is thinking right now, "No way bro!" Okay, before you jump down my throat let's pump the breaks for a second. I don't think this deal would ever happen. But think about the idea of a guy who hit 37 home runs in only 123 games last season being the every day right fielder in Citi Field as opposed to some combination of Mike Baxter, Colin Cowgill and the hot dog vendor from Pepsi Porch.
Now think about this. Giancarlo Stanton is a PROVEN major leaguer who just turned 23. He hasn't even scratched the surface of his potential yet and he's only going to be making $500,000 this season. May Wheeler and d'Arnaud be good? Maybe, but we don't know for sure. Stanton has proven that he is an elite power hitter in the game today and he would instantly be someone who could consistently put the ball out of Citi Field.
Finally, if you look at it from this perspective you will say it's a no brainer. The prospects the Mets would be trading away (Wheeler and d'Arnaud) are prospects they got for a 36 year old rent-a-player in Carlos Beltran, and a 37 year old pitcher in R.A. Dickey. When you look at it from that perspective it's a no brainer. Stanton would be the best player in the deal, give the Mets a legitimate power bat and also give them a stop gap in center field in Juan Pierre until they can find something better. No brainer to me. But it's also wishful thinking. Don't expect it to happen, because it would involve the Mets improving their roster in a heartbeat and that's just too good to be true.
