The Yankees Need To Be All Over Justin Upton
The MLB trade deadline is only two weeks away, which means it's rumor time in the Majors. The biggest names for the most part are pitchers like Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza and Cole Hamels.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the NL west last year, aren't enjoying the same success this season. Rumors are running that General Manager Kevin Towers wants to entertain offers for two time all star outfielder Justin Upton. There's no relation to Kate but Justin is Tampa Bay Rays outfielder BJ's little brother.
Justin has a no trade clause but has said he would accept trades to either the Red Sox, Cubs, Indians or Yankees. Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have little to no interest which is absolutely shocking to me.
Here's the reality Yankee fans and I've tried numerous times to explain this to Yankee fans so let me capitalize it for you.
NICK SWISHER ISN'T GOING TO BE BACK NEXT YEAR
The response I hear all the time is, "ohh nah, it's the Yankees bro they'll resign him"
Ok bro, go ahead and give an average player who disappears in the postseason 10 million a year and just let Granderson or Cano leave the year after.
Oh I'm sorry. Did I finally get your attention?
The reality is this. Swisher won't be resigned because you need to resign Granderson and Cano next year. There are so many bad contracts on the Yankees right now that it is very conceivable that you could lose Swisher AND Granderson in the next two years.
Cano will get his money from the Yankees, because out of those three players Cano is the one you're keeping. His deal will be far over 100 mill because of the deals given to rival second basemen Ian Kinsler (5 years, 85 mill) and Brandon Phillips (5 years, 75); Lets be real Cano is better than those two. Resigning Granderson will be tough as well because he going to warrant anywhere from 80-100 million as well.
Which brings me back to Justin Upton.
Upton is 25 years old. Twenty-five!
He's a two time All Star and is a 5 tool player with Ken Griffey Jr like abilities. Why the Arizona Diamondbacks are even thinking about moving him is just plain stupidity.
The Yankees need to pull the plug on Dellin Betances, Manny Banuelos, Austin Romine, Gaby Sanchez, Chris Warren, etc and call the Dbacks up and say, "go nuts".
Upton has a relatively friendly contract and the abilities/production will be a huge upgrade to Swisher. Also even though his production wavers once in a while, he isn't lazy like his brother BJ. He won't neglect to run out grounders and non nonchalantly misplay fly balls. He can thrive here in New York.
This is a complete no brainer for the Yankees in my opinion. Lets see what the next two weeks have in store.
